Amir Husak was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina (fmr. Yugoslavia) but emigrated in his early teens due to armed conflict. His cross-cultural experiences triggered his interest in media making as a means of overcoming communication barriers and other borders, real or imagined.  He has worked as a director, editor and sound designer on numerous films and art installations.

Combining emergent and traditional media, essay and experimental techniques, Husak’s work primarily explores documentary as a social practice and investigates digital media representations of history and identity. He has shown films and interactive media projects at such diverse places as South by Southwest (US), Sundance Film Festival (US), Cinemateca Distrital (Bogota, Colombia), Sarajevo Film Festival (Bosnia&Herzegovina), Stadtmuseum Graz (Austria), P.O.V./PBS (US), Big Sky Documentary Film Festival (US), TV Cultura (Brazil), Full Frame Film Festival (US) and others.

Over the last decade, he has been teaching courses and conducting workshops on socially engaged filmmaking and interactive media at universities and community media centers in the United States, Europe, and South America. Both Fulbright and Jack Kent Cooke fellow, Husak frequently publishes articles and essays on activist documentary and collaborative media practices. More recently he also co-edited a volume on socially engaged art and activist media in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Husak is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of Documentary Studies Graduate Certificate program in the School of Media Studies at The New School in New York.

I am a multimedia journalist, photographer, and filmmaker. For the last six years, I have focused my efforts on the development of multimedia web projects, all of them related to culture, music, social movements, and new media. As a creative director, I have overseen creative teams in digital agencies and produced editorial, audiovisual, and web engaging content. I have a close relationship with alternative and DIY culture, first as a fan and then as a journalist. Through Radio COCOA and Noisey -VICE-, I have written, filmed, and photographed the underground and independent music scene of Ecuador and Latin America. Also, I was a member of the content board of Expresarte, the most popular documentary TV show about Ecuadorian art & culture. Expresarte was broadcasted in ECTV, the National Television Station. Additionally, I was involved with investigative journalism through a vlog project called La Avena Cómica. Now, I´m studying the Media Studies MA program at The New School in NYC.
Thalía Noboa
I am a Media Studies graduate student and multimedia journalist. I strongly believe in the effectiveness of cross-field pieces, particularly at service of storytelling. I have used journalism investigative skills for collecting -or gleaning- information and linguistic, visual, and interactive tools for shaping the story. I believe the form is equally important as the content. For I have co-founded and directed a web-based journalism project called La Avena Comica, the first of its kind in Ecuador. The project intersected humor, pop culture, investigative journalism in a talk show format. My work has focused on social justice, fiscal economics, electoral and non-electoral politics, migration and refugees, and contemporary art. Written publications include mainstream and independent Ecuadorian outlets. I have also worked as a short film and news program producer, reporter, broadcast news writer, video editor, and social media manager. I am interested in photography, comedy, political cartoons, illustration, linguistics, contemporary art, urban and contemporary dance, oral history and Latin American history. Among the artists/projects I admire: – Painter Mark Rothko – Photographers Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb – “Theatrical journalism” piece Fires in the Mirror by Anna Deaver Smith – Dancers Sachas Waltz and Pina Bausch – Show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver – Podcast Rough Translations – Instagram project Línea Peluda
Brian Erickson
www.bjerickson3.com
Brian brings a decade of experience in using media strategies to leverage political power for reforms that restore equity, create opportunity, and further sustainability. As a strategist with the ACLU Regional Center for Border Rights, Brian led and supported national campaigns in support of just and fair immigration reform and holding border agents accountable for respecting human rights. His work has been featured in both local and national news outlets. A proven leader, Brian brings a thoughtful approach to communications: he listens first, trusts the leadership of people whose lived experience differs from his, and works behind the scenes to ensure voices too often ignored lead social movements. Brian completed his bachelor degree in Spanish and Global Studies from Pacific Lutheran University and currently attends The New School, working on an MA in Media Studies with a focus on digital storytelling. Brian loves good coffee, craft breweries, and spends weekends camping or hiking with his partner, son, and their two dogs.

We eat, we all have sex…in an ideal world anyway. Issues surrounding the two pervade all walks of life, from individual politics to wider cultural trends. Cultures surrounding the two provide tremendous insight into understanding the human condition. As a storyteller, this is what propels my work. At least, that’s what I tell people. Truth be told, I grew up in a small Jewish community in London. My diet was limited by religious laws and sex before marriage was forbidden. I moved to New York, left religion behind and came out as gay. Writing stories about food and sex allowed me to make sense of who I was becoming. Four years on, I am comfortable with who I have become, yet the food and sex continue to fuel me. While food will be my first love, I have become increasingly drawn to the world of queer storytelling. There is a wealth of material ready to be brought to light as the West slowly opens up to nontraditional relationship structures. I was blown away by the Fathers Project. Created by Leo Herrera, this ‘documentary’ images a world in which AIDS never happened. If we had not lost all those men in the epidemic, where would they be now? What would the gay community look? The idea and execution are superb. https://www.iftheylived.org/

I am in the last semester of my graduate program at The New School, studying International Affairs with a focus on media and culture. I’m originally from Detroit, MI, where I attended Wayne State University, studying cultural anthropology. I was involved for many years in the independent, DIY, and underground arts and cultural scenes of Detroit. I have been an artist of many mediums, but most recently am inspired by multimedia storytelling as a means for social change and human rights advocacy. Over the summer of 2018, I lived and worked in Cape Town, South Africa for a 2-month internship, working with Slum Dwellers International as part of the IFP program. I was both the field correspondent for the GPIA department blog as well as a media consultant as part of my IFP. In my time at The New School, I have explored the intersections of human rights, the effects of capitalism and neoliberalism, and both narrative and non-narrative approaches to media storytelling. I am eternally inspired by all things pop culture, an unending amount of music from any genre, artists Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Varda, Henry Matisse, and Kehinde Wiley, Detroit artists Olayami Dabls and Charles McGee, the film and soundtrack Call Me By Your Name, and fashion designers Jacquemus, Mara Hoffman, and Molly Goddard, among many others.
Aisha Quiñones
My name is Aisha Quiñones who hails from Harlem, NY. Born & raised. I always grew up with a passion specifically in sports due to my family (my grandmother & my uncle, to be exact). Thanks to them, they helped me find what career path I wanted to pursue and that’s where I ended up at St. John’s University in Queens during my undergraduate years. I was a sport management and journalism student where I later landed at my dream company of Bleacher Report who hired me full-time during my last semester. I immediately was immersed into the field I desired and have been so thankful for the opportunity. Three years later with the company, I’m now simultaneously a media studies grad student at The New School inspired to start creating my own sports content with the help of the program and become a successful sports producer & broadcaster.

Interests: My interests mostly lie within sports from basketball, football, baseball, etc. I’ve had a brief background in fashion as well. I grew up sketching & sewing so I’ve always wanted to intertwine that with sports and design a sneaker for Nike someday. I’m huge on traveling as well so I love the experiences & the newness that comes with each new place. Mental wellness & self-care is a significant part of my life’s interests too. The older I get, the more serious I see that it is to make that priority over everything else. So I’m always looking for ways to promote & remind myself and others of that.

Projects/Artists Admired: In my desired career path, the people that I admire the most especially at this point in my life are women such as Taylor Rooks, Ros Gold-Onwude, Doris Burke, and the list goes on. They have an influential imprint on the sports industry and they’re a huge part of the reason why I’m pursuing it. They all bring something different but equally valuable to the table as far as projects, delivery, personal presence, etc.
